This 12.4-mile (20 km) route is a scenic ride that takes you through local colonial towns, stunning volcanic landscapes, and local markets.
Made up of two volcanoes, Ometepe Island is located on the great Lake of Nicaragua. It is dubbed “the Oasis of Peace” and lives up to the name with its serene landscapes. The entire route is a challenging 26-mile (42 km) ride. If you prefer a more laid-back, paved ride, take the Moyogalpa to Altagracia route, a 15-mile (24 km) tour that takes you past small villages, banana plantations, and more.
Start your day in the historic city of Leon and take a 12.4 mile (20 km) ride to the little beach village and fishing community of Las Peñitas. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the town’s two rivers and expansive mangrove forest. Enjoy a surf lesson or take a kayak tour along the Juan Venado Nature Reserve for an even more unforgettable day!
For more advanced cyclists, the Matagalpa Highlands’ 37.43 mi (60 km) trail through the mountainous region offers unforgettable views of lush greenery, Nicaragua’s famous coffee plantations, eco-lodges, and waterfalls.

Whether you’re looking to make your entire trip to Nicaragua a biking vacation or looking to add a few trails to your visit, this welcoming country has plenty of accommodations to offer. Choose from guided tours, take a self-guided route, or join other peddle enthusiasts for a fun excursion. Many resorts, biking clubs, and travel sites offer biking vacation packages, including airfare and airport transfers, English-speaking guides, accommodations, meals, and guided biking adventures.
When selecting a biking vacation package, a daily itinerary is organized. A typical day on your cycling holiday will start with breakfast and a drive to the day’s biking location; let’s use Ometepe Island as an example. The guided tour will likely make a few stops along the 26-mile trail to take in the beautiful views of the lake and spot monkeys and other wildlife. Since this ride passes through several Indigenous settlements and other must-see areas, a stop for lunch will definitely be a memorable reprieve. On tours like these, cycling packages often include overnight stays at each riding destination, including dinner.
For avid cyclists, biking vacations offer an opportunity to partake in their favorite activity in a whole new landscape. New challenges, scenery, personal records, and lasting memories are guaranteed. Undoubtedly a great way to boost physical fitness, cycling vacations are also an eco-friendly way to travel and explore a new country. A biking vacation allows you to experience nature and culture, as well as travel in a more immersive way.
Experienced cyclists know the importance of the right gear for each type of trail and location that different types of terrain call for specific bikes, and that protective equipment is paramount for a safe and happy ride.
Depending on the trip you book, a bike will likely be provided for you, most commonly a mountain bike, given Nicaragua’s mountainous terrain. Other options for more leisurely biking trails are road bikes or hybrid bikes.
Helmets, gloves, and protective gear are recommended. It is best practice to always ride safely, especially when exploring new and challenging terrains. Check with your tour organizer before your trip to ensure repair kits are available and included in your package. A safe trip is a good trip!
A comfortable ride is just as important as a safe one. Research your routes and weather reports for the region to come prepared with comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing. Padded shorts, moisture-wicking shirts, comfortable sneakers, and sunglasses should be at the top of your list!
Although it is a vacation, a cycling holiday still requires some preparation. From making sure your body is up to the adventure to being a respectful traveler, we’ve compiled a list of key tips to make your biking vacation the best one yet.
Avid cyclists are aware that physical preparation for a biking trip should not be skipped. Whether it’s not your first rodeo or you’re new to cycling, it’s important to be prepared for your trip. Physical training prior to your Nicaragua biking tour extends beyond riding your bike on your local trails. Stretching, cardio, and strength and endurance training is highly suggested.
As previously mentioned, researching your routes is a great way to ensure you’re prepared. Local road conditions, tropical weather, and proper gear will help you stay safe on the trails. Staying hydrated and nourished is also important, so make sure that your reusable water bottle (and your belly) stays full!
The best time to visit Nicaragua for a biking vacation is during its Dry Season, which is considered summertime. From December through May, the temperature is hot and dry, with slightly cooler nights. May is typically the hottest month of the year. With clear skies and average temperatures in the high 70s and 80s, the dry season is your ideal time to ride.
If this is your first time in Nicaragua, it’s a good idea to do some research on local customs and culture. Be kind and respectful, and interact with the welcoming and beautiful Nicaraguan communities.
Nicaragua takes its local conservation efforts seriously, as you’ll see when you tour its lush and thriving landscapes. Be aware of your eco-footprint and respect your surroundings. Support locally owned establishments and don’t litter or disrupt the natural wildlife. If you have any questions, your local guide will gladly help you navigate any nuances!
